While most Taichung residents can speak some English, and read quite a bit, a few well-placed phrases come in handy. Taiwanese are aware of the difficulties facing foreigners in learning Chinese, and are very appreciative and understanding when foreigners speak Chinese. 

Although people in Taichung are known for their friendliness and ability to make allowances for cultural faux pas on the part of foreigners, learning some of the most important customs will make life smoother and easier for the foreigner.
