The Greater Taichung area is one of Taiwan's main economic centers. Taichung City is the hub for this region, which encompasses Taichung, Changhua, Nantou, Miaoli and Yunlin counties, covers an area of 10,506 square kilometers (4,057 square miles), and is home to over five million residents.

Reaching back to its agriculture roots which are vibrant even today, Taichung's economy has grown enormously over the decades to become the main manufacturing hub for small to medium size enterprises, one of Taiwan's strongest service-industry markets and, most recently, a fast-growing center for high-tech industries. Today, the broad-based economy continues to thrive in a variety of sectors--from aerospace to agriculture--thanks to continuing, growing investments from local and international companies.
