With the progress in technology and network, the flower industry has also moved towards internationalization, the flower industry in Taiwan has shown a significant growth in recent years in terms of production area, domestic output, and export value.
There are about 972.28 hectares of flower planting areas in Taichung, the second largest flower producing area in Taiwan, with the production focusing mainly on gladiolus, lily, and cymbidium. Most of the flowers are sold through farmers associations, production and marketing squads, and cooperatives. Flowers are delivered to wholesale market for auction or retailing.
To promote flower production and marketing, it is a must to first establish a local logistic center which is equipped with computerized information systems for centralizing, auctioning or ordering, and distributing flowers in a fair and equitable bidding environment. Then, the center must be upgraded to be a world-class flower wholesale distribution center by combining the resources of the local industries and actively exploring the export markets. It is suggested that this center be established in Taichung area so as to consolidate all the flower resources, serve the flower wholesale markets in northern, central and southern Taiwan, and explore the export markets.
