Greater Taichung's high-technology electronics sector has received an enormous boost from the inauguration of the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP), which follows similarly-successful science parks in Hsinchu and Tainan. The Central Taiwan Science Park is expected to begin generating its first products in the first quarter of 2005, when its biggest tenant, AU Optronics, begins production of TFT-LCD panels at its large, sixth-generation plant.
Taichung City and the Greater Taichung area has long been host to a wide variety of electronics-related manufacturers and businesses, mostly small and medium-sized enterprises focused on OEM export products. While many lower-end manufacturers have moved offshore in recent years, the opening of the CTSP is drawing a flood of new high-tech businesses and talent. This primarily consists of companies involved in the specifically targeted industries of nanoscience-based optoelectronics, integrated circuits, biotechnology, precision machinery, and telecommunications.
This influx is expected to continue growing, as the CTSP has completely filled its current Taichung and Yunlin bases--a total of 414 hectares--and is seeking further space for expansion. Confirmed investments as of the end of 2004 included 64 companies investing over NT$540 billion.
