The Completion of the First Dredging Construction of Sun Moon Pond in 100 Years – Mayor Lin and His Wife Boated on the Pond

The first large scale dredging of the Sun Moon Pond in Taichung Park in the past 100 years has been completed and the inferior water quality problem caused by pond mud has been completely resolved. Sun Moon Pond Concert was held on February 4th by the Construction Bureau, Taichung City Government to invite citizens to witness the rebirth of Sun Moon Pond. Mayor Lin Chia-lung stated that the Taichung Park Pavilion is a landmark of Taichung. After improvement construction, not only is Sun Moon Pond cleaner, it will also attract more people to visit the park. He welcomes all people to pay a visit and experience the brand new Taichung Park.

At today’s concert, many citizens enjoyed scenery of the pond with their family members and lovers while boating on it. Many citizens said that the Sun Moon Pond really looked different and is much cleaner and more beautiful. Mayor Lin also boated with her wife Liao Wan-ju and witnessed the rebirth of Sun Moon Pond along with fellow citizens. Deputy Mayor Chang Kuang-yao; Councilman Chang Ya-min, Ho Wen-hai, Chiang Chao-kuo, Fan Sung-yu, Chiu Su-chen; Director Huang Yu-lin of the Construction Bureau; Director Hsiao Huan-chang of the Fire Bureau; and others all participated in this grand event.

Many citizens came to listen to the concert. Chairman Liu Chao Hui of Shin Min High School led students from the Department of Performance Art and the choir to perform large scale plays and celebrated the rebirth of Sun Moon Pond with their singing. Taichung Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, Yazhuo Art Iris Flute Band, the choir of Taichung Central Rotary Club, and other groups took the stage one by one and gave their blessings to the rebirth of Sun Moon Pond with their touching music.

Mayor Lin stated that the Taichung City Pavilion that is located at the center of Sun Moon Pond is the landmark of Taichung. After the dredging construction of the pond, not only the quality water of the pond has improved, 4,000 tons of flowing water is also recharged daily from Hanxi Lake to maintain its quality. Now, not only fishes are swimming in the pond, the crowd of people has also returned. He expects local dwellers who are working outside Taichung to visit Taichung Park when returning home and experience the brand new Sun Moon Pond.

Mayor Lin stated that this year is important for Taichung, as both Taichung Station and the Second Market will celebrate their hundred-year anniversary and this is also the 100th year of the Seven Mazu Festival at Wan Chuen Temple. The Taichung City Government will hold a series of events to celebrate and commemorate the past history of this city. Looking towards the future, he expects to work hard with the citizens and make Taichung a livable city and the capital of life.

The Construction Bureau stated, due to the fact that Sun Moon Pond is a closed pond, its major source of water comes from rain water and underground water. With the total water volume of 18,000 tons, it takes about 900 days for the water of Sun Moon Pond to circulate once. Given that only a limited amount of water is being recharged into the lake, the pond-bottom mud that has not been cleaned for years, and droppings from fish, turtles, ducks, geese and other organisms, the pond water suffered severe eutrophication, causing the water to become filthy and give off a peculiar smell.

Director Huang Yu-lin of the Construction Bureau stated that the city government conducted the largest scale of dredging construction of the Sun Moon Pond since October 2016 and dredged around 4,706 m3 of pond mud. Besides dredging, enclosure construction was also conducted around Sun Moon Pond so that animal droppings can be gathered and purified before finding its way back into the pond. Two wells were dug to pump 2,000 tons of water daily. Also, around 4,000 tons of flowing water from Hanxi Lake can be recharged into Sun Moon Pond, allowing its circulation to occur more quickly. He hopes that through this construction, Taichung Park can be transformed into a world-class tourist attraction.
