As Dragon Boat Festival is approaching, zongzi (粽子) are on sale and/or for booking. Consumer Protection Officers in conjunction with Health Bureau of Taichung City Government made a surprise check on two leading zongzi producers, namely Evergreen Laurel Hotel (長榮桂冠飯店) and the Tempus Hotel (永豐棧酒店), today (June 8). Closely examined were their kitchens where zongzi are made, paying particular attention to the sanitary conditions of personnel, equipment, production process and the environment. In addition, the prices of zongzi were also inquired.
It was found that the kitchens of both five-star hotels were in line with the food safety and health management regulations. However, zongzi sold by Evergreen Laurel Hotel were priced NT$ 10 higher than last year, for which the hotel staff explained it was because they added more ingredients into zongzi this year.
Health Bureau has sampled and checked 66 zongzi producers and sellers in the past month. It was found that 3 producers failed to pass the test and have been dealt with according to law. Lin Yue-zao (林月棗), Director-general of Legal Affairs Bureau, said that the purpose of this surprise check was not only to stress that nobody can break laws even on festivals but also to further strengthen food safety from the supplying source.
The check was also to promote the "anti-price hike” policy of the city government. It is hoped that consumers can enjoy zongzi not only at ease but also within the reasonably acceptable price range, said Director-general Lin
